Tarralyn Jones

Bonnie Donihi

Tarralyn Jones, the CEO & Founder of TJ’s Designs & Events, is a miracle blessing in disguise. Disguise is emphasized, because you would never know that Mrs. Jones is a two time breast & brain cancer survivor. Mrs. Jones was first diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in 2002 while working as an executive in the healthcare administration market. She didn’t allow this unfortunate disease to prevent her from accomplishing her most ultimate dream; the establishment of TJ’s Promotions & Event Planning, now formerly known as TJ’s Designs & Events. Sadly, the cancer reoccurred in 2008; fortunately due to an early diagnosis, it was removed immediately.

Unfortunately, it didn’t end there. In late 2014 after experiencing several severe headaches and short-term memory loss, emergency room physicians discovered two brain tumors and immediately prepared her for an emergency operation the following day. Specialists prepared her family for the unforeseen: not having the ability to speak; walk; and have frequent episodes of memory loss. However, she prevailed and conquered her battle.

After experiencing years of unexpected scares, Mrs. Jones considers herself a living testimony. According to medical files and her strong act of faith, she is now entirely cancer free.  A dynamic community advocate to various philanthropic foundations, including the Florida Hospital Foundation, Mrs. Jones drives herself to contributing back to causes that matter most. She’s quite indeed the definition of a phenomenal woman!

Similar to Mrs. Jones heroic journey, Bonnie Donihi is also a living testimony. In 1995, Mrs. Donihi was diagnosed with late stage ovarian cancer and was told that she had eighteen months to five years to live. Sadly, like Mrs. Jones, her cancer reoccurred in 1998 and 2008, including a heart attack in 2004. However, these near fatal experiences didn’t stop her from achieving a magnitude of great deeds.

Being the resilient woman that she is, Mrs. Donihi made a promise to herself that her daughters and all women would be better informed about the signs and symptoms of gynecologic diseases. In 1997, she co-founded the Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Florida, Inc., which later became the Women’s & Girls’ Cancer Alliance (WGCA), where she served as the Executive Director. The work of the Women’s & Girls’ Cancer Alliance is now living on through Florida Hospital Foundation.

Many of Mrs. Donihi’s accomplishments include some of the following:

  • Awarded the Mary J. Brogan “Celebration of Life Award” from Lt. Governor Brogan

  • Served as the treasurer, vice president, and chaired the Partner Member Program of the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance, where she was a founding member

  • A speaker at the first Congressional Briefing on ovarian cancer in Washington, DC.

Mrs. Donihi is another remarkable representation of a phenomenal woman!

Senator Geraldine F. Thompson

Not only is Senator Geraldine F.  Thompson one of Central Florida’s most foremost public figures, an author and active community advocate, but is also a breast cancer survivor.  As a cancer survivor, Senator Thompson has been recognized for actively contributing to public awareness not only regarding breast cancer, but also AIDS & HIV. She was awarded the Mary Hatwood Futrell award by the National Education Association and the American Cancer Society legislative award for her dynamic involvement.

Always showing compassion for others, she established the College Reach Out program at Valencia College which enables thousands of unfortunate students to pursue a higher education. As a legislator, she also filed and directed bills to outlaw genital mutilation of young women and girls; established the right to compensate children injured on public school grounds; provide reparation for wrongfully imprisoned individuals; permit monotonous daily testing for HIV in a medical setting; and prohibit discrimination towards pregnant women under Florida’s civil rights laws. To preserve Central Florida’s historic community, she also spearheaded efforts to save the Well’ Built Hotel, which is now listed on the National Register of History Places. With her historic preservation background, she used her research to publish her first book, Black America: Orlando, Florida.

As a young woman with a promising future, she was mentored and worked as the secretary to Representative Gwendolyn Sawyer Cherry, the first African American female elected to the Florida House of Representatives.  She also served as a delegate at numerous Democratic National Conventions throughout the years. In October of 2015, Senator Thompson announced that she would continue to pursue her public service as a candidate for the United States Congress. Now that’s one strong phenomenal lady!

Mistress of Ceremony

Courtney Shaw

A former reigning Mrs. Florida, Courtney Shaw is another prime example of a phenomenal woman. A Central Florida resident, author, motivational speaker, community advocate, TV host for Good Life TV45, wife, and mother of two children, nothing is stopping this lady from achieving greatness! Most importantly, when she’s not on air, she’s completely devoted to bettering the lives of others, both in health & fitness.

Playing an active role in the community, Mrs. Shaw also involves her time with supporting the American Heart Association, where she participates in prevention campaign programs to better ensure that others equip to healthier lifestyles. She’s also been honored by several important public figures including Rick Scott, Andy Gardiner, Adam Putnam and Steve Crisafulli.

Mrs. Shaw was a TV host for “Let’s Chat,” where she represented married Florida women at the Mrs. America pageant in Tucson, Arizona. She is also a spokesperson for Sunbrushed, Whiter Brighter Smiles and Thicket It Hair Extensions. Now that’s a phenomenal woman!
